Founded in 2009, NAT produces their shows at the New American Theater Center @ BayWalk in downtown St. Peterburg, FL.
We draw upon the talents of actors, directors and designers from the Tampa Bay area and around the country who are shaping the American theater scene. NAT also offers a wide variety of educational, community and literary programs designed to:
- Enrich and deepen the theater-going experience for our audience.
- Provide access and affordable theater to the Greater Tampa Bay Area, including thousands of area students.
- Nurture the audience and artists of the next generation.
From our mainstage productions to the classroom and beyond, NAT is an active member of the community.
About Our Name
New American Theater was originally formed in 1972 by J. R. Sullivan in Rockford, IL. This professional regional theater offered comedies, dramas, and musicals. In addition, they offered a wide range of educational opportunities. It was here that our founder, Brian Becker, gained additional theater education and was also employed. Brian always felt at home when he was at NAT, everyone was treated like family. Unfortunately, the theater in Rockford closed their doors in 2006. Brian wanted to carry on not only the name, but the tradition of family unity that the original NAT conveyed. It’s our goal to make sure everyone involved with NAT is part of the family.
Our Mission
The mission of New American Theater is to provide the very best theater programs to a diverse audience of children, students, families, adults, and senior citizens. Through the power of the performing arts and educational opportunities, New American Theater hopes to spark dialogue, increase understanding, and foster a deep appreciation for the arts.
New American Theater will accomplish this by:
- Producing the best in contemporary and classical theater.
- Promote cultural diversity.
- Stimulate and challenge the artistic company.
- Broaden our audience and membership base.
- Build outreach and educational programming.
- Increase regional and statewide impact of our programs.
